Does anyone know the official day the IHSAA allows baseball practice to begin? How about the number of practices a player is required to have before the first game? Could get tough if a basketball team goes deep into the tourney.

First official practice: March 14 (though most teams are hitting indoors now and have been all winter). First contest date: March 28 (though that's in the middle of most schools' spring break).
You have to have five practices before competing.
If a basketball team is in the State Finals, there might be an issue, but I don't foresee much otherwise, because one can play on Saturday in the semistate, practice five days and still be ready for competition by March 28.

crimsonace: Thanks for the info...how do schools get by with the year round hitting sessions? Is it similar to "open gym"?
I would also be interested if many Indiana teams take spring break trips South for baseball?

The IHSAA rules wouldn't allow those trips. Anyway teams are limited in out of state travel (300 miles). Check the IHSAA site ihsaa.org specifically ihsaa.org/by_laws.shtm and then click on the one that says "By Laws and Articles of Incorporation" for specific in season and off season rules that schools have to abide by. Everyone should really read this, it would explain a lot of things that pop up here on this forum and others. JS

Thanks, John. I did download the rules and will read over them. Too bad we have to wade through the lawyer-speak to get a simple answer.

I know most teams in the Indy area just take part of the week off and have fun, and then start their seasons the next week.

Just curious if anyone else has middle school/junior high baseball? Washington Catholic is starting one along with several other schools in Daviess, Knox, and Pike counties.

I can't say for the school districts but we have some huge little leagues in this area that includes girls. The Mt Comfort Optimist club is taking apps now I guess, saw the sign just didn't see the registration date. They play three fields almost nightly at Mt Comfort Elementary. Nice setup for the kids, although at times they could use more parking!

Hey 83, are these teams supposed to be "SCHOOL" teams or just teams made up of players from wherever? My understanding was that the WC team was representing WC. You should read the letter sent to the Hatchet, uh kids who just happen to go to WJHS. It goes way out of it's way to say that the team has nothing to do with WJHS. It seems to read in a way that tells you the kids are hand picked without being in association with the school so they don't have to worry about other kids trying out. It's alot like the all-star teams at Washington Little League. With very few exceptions, it is merely a feeder program for WHS. It's not about the kids who deserve it. They way they are doing this non-WJHS team, other kids at the school will have no chance.

They way they are doing this non-WJHS team, other kids at the school will have no chance. I know for a fact, when Coach Steve Reed at WC had the idea to start a middle school/junior high baseball program, it was meant to prepare the teams for the varsity level. It was brought on because all the other sports were represented in the lower ranks, why not baseball. Especially since the coaches at the little league level don't know what their talking about or don't care. However Washington, or whoever is doing it like this thinks, it is a school activity. But as you said Lion87, it's politics, just as it is at the Washington Little League, if you don't run with the right crowd or go to the right school (WHS), you might as well forget about advancing in that particular system.

WC83...
There is a Jr. High league already formed in So. Indiana. It's members are Mitchell, Orleans, Paoli, Springs Valley, West Washington, Salem, NE Dubios, Perry Central, Crawford County, & North Harrison. Bedford may join this season also. 13 year old division and 13-15 division. It's actually some pretty good baseball. All teams play a 20 game schedule with a single elimination tournament at the end of the season. Most schools have 2 team (1 in each league).
